Can you picture residing in an area without even a single
Tesla (TSLA)? Test drive a vehicle from Tesla Inc. It can seem like a bygone
era given how well-known they have become since Elon Musk established the
business in 2003.
However, as Reuters first reported, one county in northern China will make it a reality this summer.
For the next two months, no Tesla vehicles are allowed to
pass through the Beidaihe neighbourhood. The 74 million-person Hebei province
in northern China, which borders the Bohai Sea, has a beach resort.
Why Is Tesla Use Illegal Here?
Instead of preserving a peaceful, car-free coast, the ban
was implemented to facilitate an annual, ultra-secret summit of top Chinese
officials in Beidaihe.
The event is typically cloaked in mystery, especially to outside spectators. The exact dates of the summit are never made public, and some coverage of it is always released after it has already occurred.
According to journalist William Zheng for the South China
Post in 2020, the most watched unofficial event in the country's political
calendar has evolved into a time for the most powerful individuals to network,
logroll, and talk with one another. It was supposedly [China's top leaders]
annual journey to relax on the famed northern resort town's expansive beaches,
but it has since evolved into an event.
The enforcement of the Tesla ban, according to a member of
the Beidaihe Traffic Police Brigade, was caused by "national
matters."
The reason why Tesla was picked out for criticism rather
than other imported cars was not further explained, and Tesla, which dismantled
its PR section, declined to comment.
